Many new businesses think, “if you build it they will come” and do not understand the critical importance and budgeting needs for marketing their product. This meeting will explain how marketing is required and instrumental in the success of new business and how the market research and the media play an important role in helping emerging companies gain visibility and get your message to your marketplace. This meeting will help enlighten the entrepreneurs by telling you the importance of researching the market for your product or service and how publications like Mass High Tech are helping the startup companies in the Boston area reach the important decision makers for their products and services.


Steve Scruton, President and CEO, Direxxis Marketing

Steve is the President and Founder of Direxxis, Inc., an integrated direct marketing application provider; Steve is responsible for all operations of the Massachusetts based enterprise. Leveraging web based application technology; Direxxis, Inc. creates an easy to use end-to-end direct marketing portal. Steve has been involved with several successful start up organizations that have all resulted in successful transactions. The most recent was Marketing Information & Technology, Inc. (MITI) where Steve succeeded in transforming a small data business into a $30 million database-marketing leader. In 2001, MITI was successfully sold to publicly held ChoicePoint Inc. (NYSE: CPS). Steve has a 15-year career in the data/database/analytic area of the marketing industry. Steve was an original board member for Sigma Analytics prior to the successful sale to Merkle Inc. Over his career, he has developed large scale prospecting and customer solutions for some of the largest High-Tech, Financial, Telecommunications, Insurance and Banking companies in the direct marketing space. Steve has published white papers and has had featured content in every national direct marketing publication and maintains several industry board level positions.

Doug Banks, Editor, Mass High Tech

Doug is the Editor of Mass High Tech: The Journal of New England Technology, a weekly publication and daily news web site that spotlights technology entrepreneurs, early-stage companies and emerging technologies in New England.

Doug joined MHT in 2005 and led a redesign of the publication in 2006. In that time, MHT has launched several new programs, a new web site and industry-specific newsletters including daily BioFlash and FinanceFlash as well as a weekly GreenFlash. Mass High Tech has won several recent journalism awards, including a 2007 top design award by the New England Press Association (NEPA) and a 2007 certificate of merit for general excellence by the national Society of Business Editors and Writers (SABEW). From 2001 to 2005, Doug was associate editor of the Boston Business Journal (BBJ). He came to the BBJ from Fast Company magazine, where he had been a staff editor after an earlier stint as a reporter/editor at the BBJ in the late 1990s.

Outside the newsroom, Doug is a steering committee member for the MIT Enterprise Forum Innovation Series and works closely with several other regional technology associations. He has taught journalism and writing at Emerson College and Boston University, and other colleges. He is vice president of the board of directors at Housing Families Inc., a Massachusetts nonprofit that provides housing for homeless families, and is an advisory board member of Families for Depression Awareness, a Waltham nonprofit that aims to help families recognize and cope with depressive disorders.

Barbara Bix, Managing Principal of BB Marketing Plus

Barbara Bix is the Managing Principal of BB Marketing Plus, a strategic marketing consultancy that works with high-tech, health care, and professional service organizations to accelerate sales and uncover new revenue opportunities. For the ten years immediately before founding BB Marketing Plus, Barbara managed markets and products for EMC, Motorola, General Electric, and Wang. Earlier in her career, she co-founded Cardinal Data, a firm that developed turnkey business systems for manufacturers. Barbara graduated The Wharton School with an MBA and the University of Pennsylvania with a BA in Cognitive Psychology. A popular speaker and writer, she has been quoted in the Wall Street Journal as an expert in online marketing and her articles on effective marketing have appeared in Mass High Tech, The Boston Business Journal, and several on-line marketing publications.


Fausto Molinet, President, Matrix Internationale

At Matrix Fausto guides technology start-up clients in strategy matters, develops key contacts and assists them in raising investment capital. Several of his clients have received significant venture funding. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE, recipient of the IEEE Third Millenium Medal and the Citation of Honor, Past Chair of the Boston Section of the IEEE, the past chair of Professional Activities, Chair of the Economic Development Committee, a Founder and Advisory Board member of the Boston Entrepreneurs' Network, and former Director of the Technology Employment Cooperative of New England. He is currently Chair of the Electro Exhibition and Trade Show. Fausto is also a Peer Reviewer for the Maine Technology Institute.

Dick Shock, President, Shock PR International, Inc.

Richard (Dick) Shock brings over 25 years of experience in direct sales and marketing of technical products at Rockwell International. He has served on various councils and professional organizations and his colleges have recognized him as a true professional. Dick’s background in introducing new products and concepts lends itself strongly to helping emerging companies gain acceptance for their start up endeavors. He is a graduate of University of Cincinnati with Bachelors of Business Administration with a Management Major. Dick’s great understanding of visionary selling techniques brings leadership in strategic planning and realistic goal setting for young, startup organizations. His communications skills with customers and their markets have taken him from Boston to all of the United States and to India, China, South America and Europe.
